We bought a kid's book about a javelina called "Don't Call Me Pig" at Jessica's suggestion. It was a hit. At one point I asked Sebastian "does the javelina want to be called pig?" "No!" he replied. "What does he want to be called?" I asked. He paused before replying "cow!"
Later I asked the same question, "what does the javelina want to be called?" But this time he replied, "scary halloweena!"
We enjoyed the aviary. Julien found a woman sketching the parrot in a little hide-a-way and spent a while talking to her. I think she enjoyed it as much as he did. You have to have careful eyes and patience to view the birds.
The Desert museum used to be my favorite place to go when we lived in Tucson, so it was fun to go back with the full family. A few animals were sleeping in the shade, but we did get to see my old favorites, the otters. Julien enjoyed the docents showing off skulls, agave, horns etc. It was a hot day but luckily there was shade to take advantage of.
Benjamin enjoyed staying up after trick-or-treating. The kids enjoyed playing with Halloween stickers that Jessica brought on the trip. Especially fun to put on your feet!
After Trick-or-treating we enjoyed Tanya and David's company. David was still in his costume. After Trick-or-treating Tanya and David came by to hang out with us. David was still in his costume.
We were impressed how many adults dressed up in costumes in Arizona. It's not that way in Bloomington. Mary and James came prepared with day of the dead costumes. They looked great.
Julien and Sebastian both dressed up as the transformer Optimus Prime. Sebastian was very pleased. One of the little girls trick-or-treating with us was dressed up as a fairy on a unicorn (did anyone else notice that most girls were fairies this year?). Eventually she got so hot in her costume (it was in the 80's) that she took off her costume and her mom had to run to the car to get her shorts. Ben was dressed up as a sheep, but I never got a photo of him with his hood up.
Sebastian quickly discovered the need to take cactus spines seriously. Luckily, I was able to remove his prickers fairly easily while he exclaimed "I don't like spikey!"
We took a short, although quite difficult hike in Sabino Canyon. Sebastian spent much of the hike pointing at cactuses and saying "it spikey!" We had an excellent picnic with food from El Taco tote. The tortillas were fabulous!
